This was shaping up to be 5 star sci fi for me, until the ending. I understand that we have unreliable narrators here, and the point is to be uncertain about Decker and his state of mind, but the tilt into the fictional religion just wasn’t for me. Mercerism just wasn’t my jam the whole time. Having Decker go full religious at the end to deal with his trauma felt a bit abrupt to me, and unsatisfying as I wasn’t a huge fan of that aspect of the world. Overall though, super thought provoking and unsettling read. Enjoyed it very much.
