The Killing of Caroline Byrne: A Journey to Justice by Robert Wainwright

3.0

On the night of 7 June 1995, Sydney model Caroline Byrne died. Her body was found, embedded head-first into a crevice at the bottom of The Gap at the entrance to Sydney Harbour. Was her death suicide, or murder?

In this book, Mr Wainwright writes of how Tony Bryne, Caroline’s father, sought justice. He never believed that Caroline would have taken her own life.

In 2009, when this book was published, Gordon Wood had been found guilty of the murder of Caroline Byrne. In 2012, he was acquitted, serving just three years of a minimum 13-year sentence.

I read this book knowing that Gordon Wood had been acquitted. Three judges, in the Criminal Court of Appeal unanimously found that there was insufficient evidence to prove beyond reasonable doubt that Mr Wood killed Ms Byrne. Mr Wood then sued the state of New South Wales for millions of dollars claiming malicious prosecution and wrongful imprisonment. In 2018, a judge ruled that the prosecution was not malicious, and no compensation was payable.

Justice?
