Overcoming Trauma/Loss

With the upmost respect to TJR “HOW DARE YOU!?!?” I am not a person who cries during books. Beth gets sick? Heavy blink. Dobby? Got a lip quiver. The 13? Misty eyed. This had me SOBBING so much that I sincerely lost count of the number of times my husband asked if I was ok. I WAS NOT OK!!  I think that this book just hit a little too home for me. I related to Suzan so much because it doesn’t matter how much time you get, it’s never enough when it comes to losing your child. Then on the other side of relating to Elsie, I think that it’s any spouses fear of losing the other; they’re your other half.

TJR wastes no time ripping out your heart. I appreciated this versus building up to it. Dual timelines always stress me out because I know they’re going to be traumatic. Knowing what happens and how it happens upfront let me enjoy the timeline of their journey more and on the flip side I was able absorb the pain of the second timeline a little easier without being blindsided.

If you’ve ever been hit with grief, Elsie is a very relatable character. She had her life, her future, her everything ripped from her in a matter of moments and is left not knowing how to live or move forward. The process of grief and grieving is a whole other level of trauma that’s different from, yet adjacent to loss. And this story handles it beautifully.

This book is 100% worth the read just be ready with tissues and to maybe pull a Joey by hiding it in the freezer when it becomes to much.
