Space Opera. Race with a bunch of scruffy-looking adventurers. Some greater understanding of the diverse groups that make up this empire are slightly explored, but it's more about how these heirs to the empire grow. Also, lots of shock and betrayal at the end. Comes with a cliffhanger. Thankfully second book.
