Summer Days and Summer Nights by Roy Callaghan Vegas
4.0
First and foremost, I thank the author for giving me an opportunity to review such a wonderful piece of children's literature.
Children's Literature is one such genre in which I, as an grown-up reader, have not ventured into enough. Hence, my critique on Summer Days & Summer Nights will be restricted to the thematic and structural aspects of the book. After all, what we read and understand in our childhood days adopt a different façade when we reread them as adults. Summer Days & Summer Nights is a collection of children's short stories, which have been composed beautifully with the simple joys of life.
The first reason why I liked reading Summer Days & Summer Nights is because of its content. The anthology has a nostalgic undertone that prevails throughout the book. In fact, the blurb itself explicitly states that this book is meant to "...bring back fond memories of the past." Secondly, the book is laden with a handful of short stories, inspired from real life experiences. Most of them being universal in nature, some parts of Summer Days & Summer Nights are at times humourous; and then there are instances of bittersweet remembrances. The emotional experience incited by the book are short-lived yet profound, hence creating a wonderful atmosphere in the book. Thirdly, the title itself, I believe, speaks volumes about the anthology. Summer Days & Summer Nights; the name itself suggests a phase of happiness, enthusiasm, zeal, uncontrollable excitement, and optimism. Yet, like the law of the Universe, this phase too has a beginning and an end. I personally felt that underneath all the laughter and humour, each of the short stories in Summer Days & Summer Nights has a subtle overtone of regret and wistfulness oozing out from every line. The pangs of nostalgia, indeed, seem to emerge through these stories of simplicity and timidity.
I convey my best wishes to the author for his future endeavours.
