Writing this after wrapping up Chapterhouse — retrospectively, I can say I definitely enjoyed this! I recall being thrown off with the shift coming from the first trilogy, but in the grand scheme of things God Emperor’s role as a transitional story is so unique.
This sets the stage for the rest of the series, while being independently strong as a standalone chapter in the saga. Herbert lathers on plenty of thought-provoking socio-eco-theo-political material throughout, but it’s never too oppressive.
All that aside the God Emperor is just such a compelling ruler/hero/villain! Just by his design his arc gives you so much to think about. I’ll definitely miss the experience of reading this for the first time, but I’m looking forward to revisiting in a few years.
