The Manningtree Account by Becky Wright

5.0

Well, I don't normally read novellas but this is the second one in a matter of weeks and I'm beginning to see what I've been missing. Although I still prefer the word count of a book, these 'little books' are sharp, fast paced and perfect for reading in one sitting.

The Manningtree Account is based on the real life events of the infamous Witchfinder General, Matthew Hopkins, and, as such, this gives the tale an immediate air of credibility. The author skillfully weaves the past and the present, taking us on a helter-skelter ride through the darkness.

Her pacing in this is spot on, making you want to read just one more chapter before setting it down. I loved the dialogue from the parts in the past (hard to say more because of spoilers) and there is true menace hiding in the corners, always a sure-fire way of bringing me back for more.

And that twist at the end? Darkly delicious.
