Ordinary Monsters by J.M. Miro
5.0
Definitely a top book of the year for me.
Sure it’s chunky (almost 700 pages), but it is so well written and so captivating that you fly through it. The author usually gets a couple of things to happen in each chapter at the same time so you’re bouncing between this and that but in a way that isn’t confusing or annoying – it actually enhances the chapter. There were also multiple battle scenes that played like a movie as I was reading – teetering back and forth between different parts of the battle and engaging you in all sides of it at the same time. Specifically, the epic train battle scene and the last chapter where all the remaining characters split up in combat.
The atmosphere was dark and haunting, perfect for this time of year. I’ll be recommending this to everyone who is open to fantasy until I have no one left to recommend it to.
