This book intimidated me so much! I read the first 60 or so pages and then had a hard time picking it up. When I finally did pick it back, I got so into it that I finished it in a weekend. I have no regrets and I’m struggling not to immediately start reading the second book.

It took me so long to put the pieces of this book together and I kind of love it for that. It’s been a long time since a book has truly challenged me. I think that says a lot about what I’m reading but I truly loved the challenge of this book.

The characters were so intriguing. Flawed and real in a way I haven’t experienced often in a book. Even when I didn’t agree with decisions they were making I understood why they made those decisions.

The overall plot was honestly amazing. The way Jemisin seamlessly weaves these different time periods together is honestly awe inducing. If my writing could be half as good as Jemisin’s I would die happy. She knows her craft and executes it well.

I honestly don’t have a bad thing to say about this book aside from it being a little hard to initially get into. Once I got into the meat of the story though putting it down was nearly impossible. This is a short review because it’s a rave. I loved this book with my entire heart and it’s joining my short list of favorites.
