Sam's and Frodo's relationship is so beautiful, it really is the beating heart of this story. Which makes the ending

heartbreaking, but also cathartic because Frodo finally gets to have peace with Gandalf and the Elves overseas. And Sam has a family, Merry and Pippin have each other. It's really beautiful!
