Shane by Jack Schaefer

4.0

Great book. Classic cowboy story told from the point of view of a young boy. It had every trope of the great Western stories. It is probably is the origin of them.

A gun fighter dressed in black rides out of the east, dark and mysterious past. Tries to settle down with some homesteaders who are harassed by a rancher having issues with water supply. Great conflict, great build up, awesome resolution.

There's a message communicated about childhood boys and the love they have for the father and men in their lives. I think about it frequently. The more docile loving father, settled down, works with his hands vs. the dark, brooding, vicious, hardened man. He loves them both, but only one can stay.

This pairs up with the movie Logan, which actually has portions of the movie Shane in it. Watching the two movies after the book is worthwhile, the messages stack up.
