This story is made so much more beautiful and impactful through the warm and texturous quality of the illustrations, the flowing beauty of the hair of all characters, the vibrancy of color attributed to shared activities, and celebrations of dancing and culture and community, and the emotion held in the faces and sometimes tears of the characters. I came away from this with a greater appreciation of my own decision to grow my hair out, and what it means in that I carry the wisdom and knowledge I have gained and continue to gather about myself and my community and my place in the greater world… it is all woven into my hair and I carry it proudly.
