It’s so interesting to go back to the first step into Middle-earth. It’s been so long since I’ve read it that a lot of it was like reading it for the first time.

The thing that struck me most is Tolkien’s style in this, which he almost completely drops apart from in the extended legendarium with this almost omnipresent narrator that talks directly to the reader at times. I love getting to see the building blocks of what would become (in my opinion) that greatest story to be told, especially the off hand references to lore like Gondolin which wouldn’t make sense for decades!
