For some reason I was anticipating this book being “just okay” and I was pleasantly surprised! I haven’t heard much said about it in the online book world despite it being a Book of the Month pick a while back, and I think that lowered my expectations.

Skye is a 39-year-old with commitment issues stemming from childhood trauma. She runs a successful company organizing tourist trips for black travelers, and her globetrotting ways perfectly suit her refusal to put down roots.  Skye comes off as very immature for her age, and that simultaneously adds to her complexity and takes away from her likeability.

When she finds out the egg she donated to an old friend is now a parentless 12-year-old, she selfishly decides to stay in town for a while with the hope that building a relationship with the child will give her someone to take care of her in her old age.  Of course, she gets a whole lot more than she bargained for.

Skye Falling FELT like a coming of age novel, except the person coming of age was turning 40 instead of 14.
