The Hunter by Tana French

5.0

The Searcher was the first novel I ever read by Tana French, on the recommendation of an airport stranger, after I forgot to pack a book. I devoured it a matter of hours.

After going on to read French’s other novels, I came to realize how different Cal’s pov is from the characters in her Dublin Murder Squad series. This is Tana French’s specialty, embodying which ever character’s story she’s telling.

This is why I was pleasantly surprised by the dual pov, Cal and Trey. It was such a departure from her usual style and such a fresh way to see a character we already seemed to know. Cal took on a different skin in the book. His flaws are more visible, his hesitations more apparent, and his mistakes more impactful. Trey’s pov adds so much depth to the world of Ardnakelty, so many little nuances Cal would never catch. Cal is the searcher and Trey is the hunter.

This is fantastic follow up to The Searcher. It’s a wonderfully complementary story that throws you for a loop in a moment you don’t expect.
