One Piece, Vol. 17: Hiriluk's Cherry Blossoms by Eiichiro Oda

adventurous emotional funny fast-paced

5.0

Volume 17 follows the showdown between Wapol, Chopper and Luffy! Once again, I'm much more invested in the characters, though the fight scenes can be cool as well! It was so touching to see Luffy accepting Chopper as a friend immediately and Sanji joking about Luffy also being a 'monster' to make Chopper feel more welcome. The friendships at the heart of the story always make me so emotional 🥺 I also liked how Luffy berated Wapol for flying the pirate flag without being dedicated to actually being a pirate. We know that he's serious about his dream of becoming the Pirate King and has no patience for anyone who's not willing to fight for their dreams!

In the end, I'm so happy that Chopper is officially joining the crew! He's so adorable, but also a well-written character with his own insecurities! The goodbye with Dr. Kureha was both hilarious but also deeply touching, as despite being pretty hardened, she still has a good heart!
