I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak

4.0

I really loved reading this. Ed is a great character and the little 'stories' he gets involved in are very moving. Markus Zusak is really good at writing emotionally gripping stuff without getting to dramatic.

About the ending...
Spoiler I was a bit shocked at first, but I really liked how meta the message turned out to be. Also because this book actually did teach me things about the people I know and about myself. Ed was a great message, and Zusak is a great messenger.

One big difference with The book thief (the only other book by Zusak that I read) is that I found the characters of The book thief so realistic and touching, while in I am the messenger I had some trouble with liking Ritchie and Audrey, because you don't really get to know them. Audrey just seemed... a bit boring. But in the end, of course, Ed is the main character and that makes everything okay because Ed was just amazing.
