Transcendent Kingdom by Yaa Gyasi

5.0

It is a testament to Yaa Gyasi’s talent that this book can be both so good and so different from her first book, Homegoing. The way that Gifty talks about her brother Nana’s opioid addiction and how quietly throughout this book you have these beautiful reminders of his humanity and love — it snuck up on me and hit me hard. Which I think was the point?
“It’s true that for years before he died, I would look at his face and think, What a pity, what a waste. But the waste was my own, the waste was what I missed out on whenever I looked at him and saw just his addiction.”
I couldn’t put this book down. And now that I’ve finished I feel a bit gutted, but in a good way.
You are the best there is Yaa.
