Dark retelling
Abuse and control
Found family
This book had me on the edge of my seat right from the beginning. Evangeline was a scary character, like Cordelia her daughter, I feared her. Cordelia was abused and controlled in such a subversive way.
As the plot rolled out, we began to see all that Evangeline was capable of. Even so, as the pages turned, I found myself shocked.
The found family in Hester (for Cordelia) was the absolute sweet spot of the story alongside Hester's chemistry with her Lord. We needed some good with the cruel.
Readers will find themselves hugely gripped by the gruesome characterisation as much as the kind characters.
