An Immense World: How Animal Senses Reveal the Hidden Realms Around Us by Ed Yong

5.0

This book was SO good! Yong is an incredible science writer, and he’s done an amazing job of giving us windows into the world as it is experience by creatures with sensory systems different from our own. He does it with such gentle, open thoughtfulness, and beautiful prose. I highlighted so many bits of this to share with my students, both as examples of good writing and as gorgeous encapsulations of ideas that we discuss in my classes (I’m a writing professor who teaches first-year composition in a course whose theme is “language as a window in the mind”, and we also talk about the minds language doesn’t give us access to; Yong’s book gives us fascinating windows into those minds that are so alien to us!)
