The Crossover by Kwame Alexander
5.0
I saw Kwame Alexander speak during SLJ's online conference Summer Teen- and he was just so charismatic and engaging. I had made myself do the sports book panel, because I NEVER read sports books, and he just made it such a pleasure. When he said that his latest book (The Crossover) was written in verse, I was sold. I nominated it for my book club and I'm so glad we read it!
Alexander is a masterful writer, using multiple styles of poetry he weaves a story of a preteen boy (who loves basketball), his changing relationship with his twin brother, his father's health problems, and his mother holding it all together. Using very few words Alexander gives his readers rich characters, complicated relationships, and deep emotional connection. Plus the poems about playing basketball are smart, fun, and run across the page.
I never though I'd like a book about basketball, and I can't recommend this one enough!
