As with most classics, this is best enjoyed if you’ve got time to really sit down and settle into it. I enjoyed it quite a bit; the descriptions of place are uniformly excellent and do a lot to further the plot of the novel, reinforcing mood and themes very, very well.
Some of the lovers feel mishmashed together to serve the plot of the novel, but it’s ultimately not too distracting. Heathcliff is an intriguing protagonist, but I enjoyed the back half of the book much more than the front half; Catherine and Heathcliff’s relationship toxic high school codependent thing didn’t do as much for me as watching the fallout of Heathcliff’s actions impact a generation which had no choice but to deal with him.
Overall, very good.
