this book will have me thinking for a while. definitely not for the faint of heart, it’s a sprawling odyssey of 400 years worth of family history, infighting, domination, and loss. there is so much here that i’m not even sure where to begin, but i was left staring at a blank wall by the end. proulx somehow makes transatlantic imperialism and genocidal colonization extremely personal.
