this is like the most classic thriller/horror tale
the whole time you think, “yes, this is the consequences of your actions. why are you making such decisions”
the storytelling is wild
the telling through letters first of all
and then telling the story through letters of a man who he picks up at sea, who tells the story of a creature he created, who then tells his own story of being created and his child development
it was giving inception throughout
it’s a very interesting thought experiment in prejudice and moral development. but also Frankenstein is lowkey a dick who takes no responsibility for his actions
like yeah; this thing killed everyone you loved bc you created it and then just let it loose out of your own shame
the transference of responsibility back and forth so no one truly feels accountable
the pain of loneliness and lack of belonging
tbh everyone dies
also the weird cousin love side plot??
can you imagine a guy saying he had a terrible secret that would change your opinion of him forever but will only tell you the day AFTER your wedding 🚩🚩🚩
and just both victor and the creature putting so much on partnership / romance to heal them
omg ALSO the weird family stalking subplot??
honestly it was way more interesting than I thought and it was overall both easy and enjoyable to read. but really weird still lol. and it reminds me why men need women as voices of reason to call them out on bullshit. never trust a man in isolation
