Under the Whispering Door by T.J. Klune

emotional hopeful reflective medium-paced

5.0

Ruthless and selfish lawyer Wallace Price is always putting himself and his law firm above everyone else in his life. So when he suddenly dies from a heart attack and wakes up at his own funeral,  Wallace is the only person who is bewildered by the lack of mourners. There he meets Mei, his Reaper, who is in charge of getting Wallace to the ferryman, Hugo, in order to prepare for what comes next. Just as he was in life, Wallace is difficult and obstinate when he first meets Hugo, but as he spends more time with Hugo and Mei, Wallace discovers that there is more to life than he ever realized.

Klune was able to cover a topic that is incredibly difficult in a way that is astute and profound, without being dark. This book made me laugh and cry repeatedly and I'm so thankful that it came into my life. I absolutely fell in love with these characters and yearned to visit Hugo's tea shop!
