The previous book, The Novice, ended on a cliffhanger, with Fletcher being arrested for attempted murder, just after winning the tournament at Vocans, and at the start of this novel, he is still locked in a dungeon awaiting trial for this offence.

Without giving away any spoilers, since the synopsis already makes it clear he gets out, Fletcher manages to gain his freedom, but the way this is handled is both well thought out and satisfying, which means it is not resolved within a few pages.

The remainder of the story revolves around a raid into Orc lands, which has several goals, needs to take place within a limited time frame and consists of a number of small teams of Summoners, not all of which are friendly towards Fletcher.

This section is well written with a good mixture of characters, both old and new, which allows for a taut, tense, action-rich adventure that also weaves in a thread of mystery and intrigue, and finishes on yet another cliffhanger, that will have you looking forward to book three.

This is an easy-to-read, fun, engaging, fast-paced adventure, that you need to read if you enjoyed the first book.
