I've read so many books about WWII from the viewpoint of the Jewish people and the Allies that I didn't really think about what the war was like for the normal, every day family of Germany. This is based on the Author's grandparents experiences reconstructed from their letters which anchors it in reality instead of German propaganda of reality. It was a book that challenged my perceptions of every day German families and humanized them.
