Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth by Chris Ware

5.0

I taught this book when I taught Contemporary Literature in college. You would not believe how many students thought they were reading the most complex text since Shakespeare. For me, it will always be one of my favorite books--graphic or otherwise. The story of Jimmy Corrigan and the generations that came before him is enhanced by Ware's artwork; from his repetition of panels of minute detail to his grandiose scenes at the first World's Fair in Chicago.

There are times when it gets bogged down by its own melancholia; Jimmy Corrigan is not a happy tale, per se. But it is one with resonance and visceral images that will keep you company in late hours when all seems hopeless.
