This was darker than I expected, and some parts were difficult to stomach, but I also couldn't put it down. It's about a group of non-humans and their allies contending with a religious cult plotting to wipe out their kind, and narrated via several intersecting character POV's.

I was hoping to enjoy the romance more than I did. Their "love" was more a result of fate/destiny and hand-wavy magical magnetism rather than a genuine connection, and it felt like they were just puppets of some larger force, constantly surprised by their own feelings and actions.

This is part of a larger series and ends on a cliffhanger. I liked this, but maybe not enough to continue the series.
