The Men by Sandra Newman

2.0

I liked the premise very much but the plot ended up being disturbing in unexpected ways and the ending was somewhat of a letdown for me. Basically one night in August all the men on Earth mysteriously vanish, I mean all of them, even the ones in utero. The main character, Jane, has a dark past in which she was exploited as a teen by an older man. I found that part of the book repulsive, which was no doubt the point, but that was too dark for me. I guess I was looking for an empowering story and this was not it. I was pretty much waiting for the book to end by the time I was three-quarters of the way through, and then I found the ending unsatisfying, which again was probably the point, but not a reading experience I enjoyed. I probably would not read another by this author.
