The Salt Grows Heavy by Cassandra Khaw
5.0
I did not know I needed fairy tale retellings with gore and body horror, but evidently, I did! The Salt Grows Heavy follows a mermaid with no voice and her companion the plague doctor as they stumble across a group of bloodthirsty children. The Little Mermaid meets Grimm Brothers tales in an incredible new way.
So much is packed into this short story. I listened to it in one sitting and was rapt the entire time. Highly recommend for a strange little horror tale. I also recommend reading the short story And In Our Daughters, We Find a Voice. I would say the writing in The Salt Grows Heavy has more of an elevated register, with more of a poetic tone, but it is definitely a taste of what to expect.
