The Go-Between by L.P. Hartley

5.0

Evocative and lush, Hartley's depiction of fin de siècle England is both brilliant and haunting. Bit by bit we fall into a rarified world through the viewpoint of a naive yet perceptive 12 year old school boy. Boyish concerns hide (or indeed represent) monumental shifts in English society, culture and history.

I thought this book might be a tad boring or slow yet it was enthralling: the observations, the wit and heart make it almost impossible to put down. The writing is sublime: Hartley creates a sensuous world that feels incredibly real and yet is tinged with an effervescent feeling of reality's subjectivity.

Excellent.
