It wasn't a smooth reading experience. While it was disturbing, it felt predictable and played on making the characters nonsensical instead of actually creating an understanding of the character. There were some references to past trauma but it didn't sell the whole bit. I felt like it was more focused on having s** scenes than creating a story or a universe. It's recommended to read this before Cat and Mouse duology but I don't see why as the world-creating was kept to a minimum. I haven't read the duology yet so tbc if the characters are important in this prequel.
