The book examines Lavinias class privilege set against a dictatorship in fictional Faguas ( a stand in for Nicaragua).  Lavinia becomes more aware of the inherent and injust inequalities in her society and begins to see how poorly lower classes live while she has so much.  She joins the National liberation front to fight for the end of the dictatorship and a more equitable society.  There is discussion on what justifies violence in revolutionary movements and a recognition when you kill people you are killing people's lived ones even if they are horrible.  There is also an orange tree that used to be an indigenous woman.  Not sure about that aspect....
