I’m so disappointed. The beginning was great. The mystery was amazing! I know a few people find it over the top/too complicated, but I loved just how complicated it was! Not a beach read by any means though. The side story with Chris’ mum was kinda unnecessary, but it worked ok to make him a bit more human. And then the book goes and completely destroys everything it has built. This bit of a review I found online (https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/mark-prins/the-latinist/) REALLY hit the nail on the head for me:

“(…) the author tacks on a bizarre, gothic denouement that nothing in the development of his two main characters has prepared for. The novel’s subdued but pronounced feminist undertones suddenly morph into distasteful and implausible revenge porn that leaves a nasty aftertaste as the plot is hastily wrapped up.

Ninety percent of a smart, twisty thriller, but the finale just doesn’t work.”

I probably won’t even keep the book, that’s how weird and out of character the ending was. DO NOT READ. Two stars for the amazing mystery, but there are way better mystery books out there.
