Voice of the Gods by Trudi Canavan

3.0

As with the rest of the books in the series, I'm a bit torn over my opinion of this one. It had some great qualities, but at times I had to push myself to keep reading.

The conclusion was satisfying and tied up all the loose ends. It also capitalized on my favourite element of this series: the relationship between mortals, immortals and gods.

Unfortunately (especially in the middle), I found my interest in some of the characters we were following dwindling. Similarly, I was annoyed by the reliance on an ancient scroll to deliver information that had been clearly indicated throughout the story, and was easy enough to guess. With the wisdom and experience of multiple immortals, some thousands of years old, there was surely a more organic way for the characters to figure out/confirm the information contained in the scroll. The time spent retrieving the scroll formed some of my least favourite parts of the story (even though I liked the character seeking the scroll), so the presence of the object in the story was doubly aggravating.

In the end, I think the good in the series far outweighs the bad - it was definitely worth reading.
