Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? by Julie Smith

5.0

This book is incredible. Unlike other self-help books, which tend to push the narrative of "positive vibes only", Dr Julie shares tips, tricks, and tools she has used both with herself and her own clients who sought therapy. A lot of these tricks are simple things that you can implement into your life - for example, whilst reading this book I started a gratitude journal that I fill in every day. The book is split into sections, with each section being dedicated to a certain topic such as stress, grief or anxiety, this allows readers to quickly and easily find the place they need to look for the tips they are seeking. Julie writes in such a down-to-earth way that it almost feels like you're talking to a close friend whilst reading. This, personally, is really helpful, as making the content more personal makes it easier to take in and implement into your own life instead of sounding incredibly formal and just dumping psychological data onto the reader (no matter how interesting that might be LOL!)

I found Dr Julie through Snapchat, and I ended up following her on Instagram and TikTok as well, she posts short, bite-sized pieces of mental health content that include a lot of information in sixty seconds. Of course, you can't put ALL the information into a sixty second clip, so seeing Julie be able to expand on topics she's covered before is incredibly interesting.

Again, this book is a brilliant read, and I think I will be returning to it quite regularly.
