Maya and the Rising Dark by Rena Barron

4.0

One of our “Panda” books for 2021/22 and a hit with middle school students who can’t wait for the sequels.

I find it interesting that unlike historical fantasy where children are left to resolve the mysteries and conquer evil on this book the adults including parents, neighbours and teachers join in the efforts.
There is also a more nuanced approach to who is “good” and “bad” and introspection on the role of the protagonists in perpetuating violence.
