Rogue Princess by B.R. Myers

3.0

When Princess Delia decides to take a ride on her ship while avoiding making a decision on whom to marry, she finds a stowaway. Soon she and the stowaway, Aidan, go on a tour of Aster. She starts to wonder whether she should marry for the sake of her kingdom or for love? This gender swapped, sci-fi reimagining of Cinderella features a princess obligated to marry a prince for his planet’s natural resources; and a boy who has taken to pawning stolen items in order to survive. Myers does give their relationship some time to develop beyond “insta-love.” The typical Cinderella narrative is “royalty falls for poor peasant,” and while present it also takes the time to really explore Aster’s class dynamics. Beyond her romance with Aidan, a big part of Delia’s journey is her realization of how much her people are suffering economically. While there is socio-political commentary, there are plenty of excitement and twists to keep readers interested. The only real quibble is that the supporting characters could have more character development. Those who have finished Cinder and the rest of the Lunar Chronicles series may want to read this next. Fans of An Ember in the Ashes and The Wrath & the Dawn series may also like this one.
