Dreamhunter by Elizabeth Knox

Wow! Great novel. Only drawback is that there isn't much of an end. It truly is part of a "duet," and now I've got to get the second half of the duet! A review on the back made reference to The Golden Compass (His Dark Materials) series, and I thought that was a good point: it had kind of that same feeling to it, though without the controversy and offense to Catholics and perhaps other believers in general. Had an atmosphere of otherworldliness mixed with the real world, all set in the early 1900s in perhaps the New Zealand area, since the author is from around there (I think...), but not really clear where it would be. The characters really elicit our concern and sympathy. I liked the bits of fantasy elements in the story, but it didn't necessarily read like a typical "fantasy" novel. Looking forward to resolving the "mysteries" of this set in the next book.
