Ghost by Jason Reynolds

4.0

Young Castle Crenshaw, aka "Ghost" has always been a fast runner but he doesn't see this skill as an opportunity until one day when he drops in on an inner-city track team practice and decides to show the people on the field some of his speed. The coach is impressed and drives Ghost home to see if he can gets his mother's permission to add him to the team. She agrees provided that Ghost gets into absolutely no trouble whatsoever in school or out. This chance for success is almost immediately put in jeopardy as Ghost rashly jumps into a fight with a bully, runs out on an afternoon of classes and more. The reader feels for Ghost the whole way through as he struggles with his past and attempts to blaze a path into a hopeful future. This was a fantastic book from start to finish with perfect voice and a huge heart.
