My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh
2.5
This book follows the protagonist spiralling after the deaths of her parents, and justifying her behaviour by telling herself that she’s going to take a year to sleep (with the help of a lot of a medication) and then emerge as a new person. I felt that the book undermined itself when she does in fact emerge with a new outlook on and appreciation for life — but continues relaxing anyways, spending her days sitting on park benches or feeding birds.
