Four Feet, Two Sandals by Khadra Mohammed, Karen Lynn Williams

Brilliant! Simple and evocative, this is a story of two girls who meet in a refugee camp, tell their story and then separate. I read it to my 5th graders and let them type comments as I went. It was amazing how little kids know about what is going on in the world. Many just didn't 'get it'. "Why doesn't she have any shoes?" was asked by many of my students - inner-city kids who know what poverty is, but haven't heard the term 'refugee camp' before. It was a great book for starting conversations.
