Song of the Six Realms by Judy I. Lin

1.0

I was lured in by the beautiful cover, like many, unfortunately. I found this book lacking in many, many aspects. The plot, the characters, the world building...

You meet the main character, Xue, and immediately jump through her childhood. This book would have benefitted from a few more pages, I think, because nothing here makes us want to follow the heroine and her story. We are supposed to feel for her when her Uncle dies, and yet it was just so predictable and we knew nothing about him, so how could we get attached?

The characters are built around tropes with no real fleshing out going on, which is a huge bummer. You have Xue, who is shy and quiet but so skilled with her music, then the Duke, mysterious and kind, his sister who is smart and sweet and her husband, cheeky and a bit mean. The mother, a mean woman, then the maid, who's stuck on her old Lady. And that's just it, it never goes any deeper than that. None of the relationships are developed, none of the romance is truly fleshed out.

The time skips are often unecessary and bring nothing, the writing is rushed and short, the setting isn't even attractive. It had a good premise at first but unfortunately, it feels like it was written as a Wattpad fanfiction and barely touched on before being published.

I dnf at 52%, right when the two main characters are writing letters to each other, because I just can not with the fanfiction like writing.
