Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

3.0

Mexican Gothic is a complex story to grade, and I wanted to enjoy this novel. The setting, the lore, and most of the characters are all up my alley. However, I often found that I would end a chapter and not want to pick this book back up. I kept feeling "meh" about it, similarly to Andy Weir's Artemis. However, the last 30 pages were action-packed, exciting, and fantastic. The story dragged for my tastes, and the slow burn majority middle doesn't justify a recommendation regardless of the expertly written finale. Her action is outstanding; sadly, this book didn't have enough of that. I hope I click better with Silvia Moreno-Garcia's next book, there's potential here, and I hope she stays in the realm of cosmic horror.
