"Try as we might to convince ourselves otherwise, the moments of our becoming cannot be carefully plucked like the ripest and most satisfying peach from the bough. In the endless stumble toward ourselves, we harvest the crop we are given."

Why did I love Go as a River? The entire book comprises the most stunning and vivid descriptions that transport you into the heart of this novel. It's a book that I am kicking myself for taking so long to read, and also grateful that I read it when I did because it was just what I needed.

Go as a River has themes of loss, love, bigotry, motherhood, perseverance, selflessness, friendship, and finding a home. It's one of those stories that I could talk about for hours, but I don't want to give anything away. So, know that it is an incredible debut novel and will stay with you for a long time.

⏳ Told over four decades
😍 Stunningly beautiful prose
🫢🏼 Debut novel
πŸ‘ Set in Colorado
😭 That ending

Go as a River is perfect for fans of Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens or Before We Were Yours by Lisa Wingate. Shelley Read is a master storyteller, and I can't wait to read more from her.
