I still think this is such an excellent start to an epic fantasy series. If SJM can do one thing, it’s write a gripping page turner. Even the second time around this book was hard to put down.

Overall I say the writing really holds up, even compared to her other works (although the tone here is a bit different). Going back I notice so many more small details that I looked over in the first read. She really had this planned more or less from the beginning. My biggest gripe is how quickly the romance between Dorian and Celaena is thrown away. While the reasoning seems logical, it largely comes out of nowhere which I think is an execution problem more than anything. There was definitely enough time to wrap that up a little nicer.

Nevertheless, a fantastic start to one of my favorite series featuring one of my favorite fictional characters.
