How Do You Live? by Genzaburō Yoshino

5.0

Written for middle graders, How do You Live ? can really be appreciated by every reader : what seems at first like a coming-of-age novel and a conversation between a young boy and his uncle is in fact a perfect picture of 1937 Japan and a lesson on art, science, history and philosophy.

I found this book extremely interesting, and particularly appreciated the note from the translator that helped locate the book in Japanese history, and also understand the context in which Genzaburō Yoshino wrote it. Published in 1937, this novel is a classic in Japan and was a source of inspiration for Hayao Miyazaki ‘s movie The Boy and the Heron.
