The Darkest Minds, by Alexandra Bracken

4.0

With the super-high rating and tons of 5-star reviews, I had pretty high expectations going into this book. Were those expectations met? Eh, sort of. I wasn’t blown away like I thought I would be, but I definitely really, really liked this.

I had a few quibbles, mainly that the narrative felt a little jumpy at times. I also felt my attention wandering a bit through the middle, mostly because I thought some things were kind of predictable - for instance,
SpoilerI suspected Clancy from the get-go
. But I enjoyed everything else. The characters are great - Ruby is a strong, capable MC, and I loved Liam, Chubs, and Suzume. And the ending more than made up for the middle. There were a lot of great (and slightly heartbreaking) twists and turns in the last 100 or so pages. It definitely didn’t end quite how I thought it would, which I was very happy about.

Overall, this was a unique take on dystopian and I’m excited for the rest of the series.
