Oh wow! Oh wow!! This book shocked me! When I first started it, I was a little (okay, a lot) put off, I wasn’t sure I could get through it, but by the 100 page mark, it had me! There were so many things I loved about this book! And a few things I didn’t, but let’s start with the good:
-The writing. Polarizing. I know. I get it. This writing style is out there, and certainly not for everyone. But I loved for it! It was witty and gorgeous! I wanted to keep reading! Not just for the story, but also so I could absorb more of the prose.
- The worldbuilding. So vivid! I felt like I had been transported somewhere wholly unfamiliar and dangerous, and it was beautifully engrossing.
- The humor. Fine. I laughed. I admit it. I was not expecting this book to be funny, but here we are, and frankly it had no right to be as well-integrated as it was.
- Fight scenes. They were glorious.
-The foreshadowing in the footnotes yes pleaseee!
The characters were middle ground for me. They’re unique and interesting, but could use a little more depth. Hopefully we see this as the series progresses.
For all I loved, there were some things in this book I took issue with:
- Mia is 16. Please. Please. Stop making everything surrounding so sexualized. She is 16.
- Everyone is so horny all the time WhY??
- The early descriptions of Mia tried way too hard to convince us how not like other girls she is.
- Some of the messages regarding beauty were a little off putting. By no means is this a moral, lesson-learning book, but you’re seriously just going to remove a girl’s freckles because she’s supposedly more attractive without them? Come on!
So yeah! Overall, loved this book! Beyond excited for the next installment, but it it not without its flaws! :)
